人物背景
吴晓刚，江苏镇江(丹徒)人。 现任香港科技大学社会科学部教授，应用社会经济研究中心主任。1987 年以全国高等学校统一招生考试江苏省文科总分第3 名的优异成绩考入中国人民大学社会学系，1991 年获法学学士学位，同年进入北京大学社会学系攻读硕士学位。1994 进入上海市人民政府研究室,从事市长文稿和政府工作报告的起草工作。1996 年赴美国洛杉矶加州大学（UCLA）留学，2001 年获社会学博士学位。2001 到2003 年任美国密歇根大学社会研究院人口研究中心 Mellon 博士后研究员，社会学兼任讲师。他自2003 年起在香港科技大学社会科学部任教，2008年升任副教授， 2011年升任正教授。
吴晓刚的研究领域包括社会分层与流动，经济社会学，政治社会学，和定量研究方法。他的文章发表于《美国社会学评论》American Sociological Review 、《美国社会学刊》American Journal of Sociology、《社会力》Social Forces、《人口学》Demography，以及《中国研究季刊》China Quarterly。他2006 年获得美国国家教育学院（National Academy of Education/Spencer 基金会）的博士后研究基金，并以发表于《社会力》的研究论文“共产党干部与市场机会”获美国社会学会亚洲/亚裔美国人研究最佳论文奖。2007 年以“精辟数据研究中国社会”获美国社会学亚洲人/亚裔美国人“青年学人”奖（the Asian and Asian American Early Career Award）。吴晓刚的研究课题受到美国Andrew Mellon 基金会、Spencer 基金会、香港特区政府研究资助局和台湾蒋经国国际交流基金会的资助。他主持的一项关于香港社会状况的调查，是第一批获得香港政府中央政策组公共政策研究基金资助的大型研究项目。他目前是香港特区政府研究资助局公共政策战略研究计划“香港社会动态追踪调查”（2009-2014）的项目主持人。
吴晓刚目前还担任国际著名社会学期刊Social Forces 和Research in Social Stratification and Mobility 的编
委，China Review 的执行编委，英文SSCI 期刊Chinese Sociological Review。他也是美国社会学会亚美分会的理事和北美华人社会学会的理事。
