英国著名物理学家斯蒂芬霍金21日在美国乔治华盛顿大学发表题为《为什么要探索太空》的演讲时说，在地球之外的其他星球上可能存在原始生命，人类正在进入一个新的太空探索时代。

这位身体无力却思想飞扬的科学大师说，如果外星生命有足够智慧，以至于能向太空中发送信号，那么他们肯定也聪明到了可以制造破坏性核武器的地步了。他本人倾向于这样一种假设———宇宙间的原始生命是非常普遍的，但是智能生命却相当罕见。
他说，外星生命可能不像人类一样是以DNA（脱氧核糖核酸）为基础的，“因此，假如你遇上外星生命，可要小心，可能会感染上奇异疾病，人类根本没有任何抵抗力”。
